Book Review: The Hourglass Door

This was a break from my required reading.  I have been struggling along with my recent book, and a friend sent this over for me to peruse.  She had seen it in the Deseret Book catalog, and requested it from the library.  I was a little leery about it.  I have an issue with LDS fiction right now.  I rarely like it.  Most of the time the stories are incredibly cheesy and predictable.  I guess I read too much in my teenage years.  (If I read another Anita Stansfield cry-fest I may have to shoot myself.)

 

Anyway, I believe the author is LDS, however nothing in the story indicates it.  I had heard it was one of those “If you like Twilight, you’ll like this”  which kind of makes me cringe, not because I didn’t like Twilight, but that ship has sorta already sailed.  I held off writing anything about this, because it took me a couple days to think about the book.

I wasn’t immediately captured by the book, but it didn’t take long to get me interested.  A concept of time travel involved with a high school love story.  Which, if you get past the high school love story part of it, has interesting possibilities.  Standard story of girl meets “strange” boy and is attracted to him.  It got really interesting when she realized that when she was with him time literally stood still. 

I found it hard to follow the author’s concept of time.  Well, not the concept, but how she explained it.  I found myself skimming over really detailed stuff, and just sticking with the general idea that time is a river, and that it was possible to be taken out of the river and standing on the bank.  You can enter the river, but since you are no longer part of the river you must keep returning to the bank in order to keep balance.  Or something like that.  Like I said, it has taken me a couple of days to think through her concept, and even now I’m not sure I get it.  My bad for skimming.

Anyway, sorry about the deviation.  It was a nice quick read (about 4 hours), and I will probably pick up the sequel from the library when it gets published.  I don’t think I would spend money on it though.
